Mac Impressions: Minute Zero

by George 4. March 2010 12:43

My Macbook Pro arrived today.

I got a feeling that tonight's going to be a good night...

I'm typing this entry out on the new keyboard while Windows 7 is installing on Parallels.

If other laptop manufacturers could just nail the presentation of the user experience, I submit that they may have a chance once a user opens a Macbook Pro.

Presently, they're collectively screwed.

I've *never* felt good about opening a new laptop or Desktop. Too much packaging, too much cruft.

With the Macbook, I have a warm fuzzy from minute zero.

What prompted the MacBook Pro acquisition, G? My company bought me one a few months ago, and I've grown to appreciate it quite a bit.

Hahaha, glad to see you're liking the experience.  Just wait until you have to go to the Genius Bar, Apple Store for your first round of support.  They're not all perfect, but most of the time they get it REALLY right.  It's jawdropping.

By the way - make sure you get an external 2.5" USB or FireWire drive that's bigger than your laptop's internal hard drive.  Plug it in, and OSX automatically asks if you want to use it for Time Machine backups.  You do.  Bam, you're done.  Best backup system I've ever used, bar none.

@phileosophos I needed to get a laptop for development. I know that at some point in the future I'm going to want to port an application to the Iphone. Why spend $1000 on a laptop now just to spend another $2000 later? It made sense to buy a Macbook Pro; and since Parallels works rather well I could use it for both Windows Development and Mac Developement when I don't have my desktop around. It also potentially frees up my Desktop for gaming.

@brentO I'll remember that. Not sure why Apple is so hot on Firewire when the rest of the world loves USB 2.0; but that's just one of life's mysteries.

Good choice, G. I didn't realize how well Parallels worked, but it is fabulous. I can do all my general work stuff (i.e., docs, spreadsheets, etc.) as well as all my development stuff on the MacBook. And I am absolutely *hooked* on the four-finger-swipe on the trackpad to invoke Expose. That alone is a total game changer for the way I use a computer.

I made the Switch about this time last year. I know the feeling.

Unboxing my iMac was the most pleasant experience ever. One display, one keyboard, one mouse, one soft power cord. a thin booklet, that was it. I didn't have to uninstall any crapware. the computer was ready to use right away..

For the longest time I thought the mac experience was this hype made up by the over zealous fan boys. Now I know what it is about. It's just hard to explain to someone about Macs. You know it's a good product, with people trying to get their friends using it, without any personal gains involved.

I wrote about my experience of the Switch. You may find some good advices on Apps in the comment section.

Regarding the middle click, G, I've found a couple of things none of which work all that well. Give this a look if you like: clement.beffa.org/labs/projects/middleclick/
